Definition

Let I=[t0,∞)I = [t_0, \infty) and let A ⁣:I→ℝn×nA \colon I \to \R^{n \times n} be continuous. Consider the linear system x′=A(t)xx' = A(t) x, and fix a norm ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot} on ℝn\R^n. Let xx be a nonzero solution of this system on II. The Lyapunov exponent (or characteristic exponent) of xx is λ(x)=lim sup⁡t→∞1tln⁡∥x(t)∥∈[−∞,∞],\lambda(x) = \limsup_{t \to \infty} \frac{1}{t} \ln \norm{x(t)} \in [-\infty, \infty], where lim sup⁡\limsup is the limit superior.

Remarks

The value does not depend on the choice of norm, because any two norms on ℝn\R^n are within constant factors of each other. A nonzero solution never vanishes, by uniqueness of solutions, so the logarithm is defined for all tt. If AA is bounded on II, then every exponent is finite.

Example: for constant AA with an eigenvalue μ\mu and eigenvector vv, the solution x(t)=eμtvx(t) = e^{\mu t} v satisfies ∥x(t)∥=e(Re⁡μ)t∥v∥\norm{x(t)} = e^{(\operatorname{Re} \mu) t} \norm{v}. So 1tln⁡∥x(t)∥=Re⁡μ+1tln⁡∥v∥→Re⁡μ\frac{1}{t} \ln \norm{x(t)} = \operatorname{Re} \mu + \frac{1}{t} \ln \norm{v} \to \operatorname{Re} \mu, and λ(x)=Re⁡μ\lambda(x) = \operatorname{Re} \mu.

Non-example: the zero solution has no Lyapunov exponent in this sense, since ln⁡∥0∥\ln \norm{0} is undefined; some authors set it to −∞-\infty.

For a nonlinear system x′=f(x)x' = f(x) with ff of class C1C^1, the exponents along a trajectory are those of the variational equation y′=Df(x(t)) yy' = Df(x(t))\, y. The largest of them measures the rate of separation of nearby trajectories.
