Statement

Let (X,Σ)(X, \Sigma) be a measurable space and let μ1,…,μn\mu_1, \dots, \mu_n be finite real signed measures on Σ\Sigma. Assume that each μi\mu_i is non-atomic, that is, its total variation ∣μi∣\abs{\mu_i} has no atoms. Let μ ⁣:Σ→ℝn\mu \colon \Sigma \to \R^n be the vector measure μ(E)=(μ1(E),…,μn(E))\mu(E) = (\mu_1(E), \dots, \mu_n(E)). Then the range {μ(E):E∈Σ}\set{\mu(E) : E \in \Sigma} is a compact convex subset of ℝn\R^n.

Remarks

A short proof considers the set KK of measurable g ⁣:X→[0,1]g \colon X \to [0, 1], compact in the weak-∗* topology of L∞(∣μ1∣+⋯+∣μn∣)L^\infty(\abs{\mu_1} + \dots + \abs{\mu_n}). The map g↦∫g dμg \mapsto \int g \, d\mu is linear and continuous, so its image is compact and convex, and it contains the range of μ\mu. For a point vv of the image, the preimage of vv in KK is compact and convex and has an extreme point by the Krein–Milman theorem. Non-atomicity forces such an extreme point to be an indicator function 𝟏E\mathbf{1}_E, so v=μ(E)v = \mu(E).

Example: for n=1n = 1 and Lebesgue measure on [0,1][0, 1], the range is [0,1][0, 1], because λ([0,t])=t\lambda([0, t]) = t.

Without non-atomicity the result fails: the Dirac measure δ0\delta_0 has range {0,1}\{0, 1\}, which is not convex. The result also fails in infinite dimensions. The vector measure E↦𝟏EE \mapsto \mathbf{1}_E from the Borel sets of [0,1][0, 1] to L2[0,1]L^2[0, 1] is non-atomic, but 12𝟏[0,1]\frac12 \mathbf{1}_{[0,1]} lies between 00 and 𝟏[0,1]\mathbf{1}_{[0,1]} and is not an indicator function.

For a student

The theorem is the basis of fair division results, such as the existence of exact divisions of a cake among several players. In control theory it gives the bang-bang principle: the set of states reachable with measurable controls is already reached with controls taking only extreme values. In economics it shows that non-atomic economies have convex aggregate behaviour.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
