Definition

Let AA be a set with a total order, and let A∗A^* be the set of finite words over AA. Order A∗A^* by the lexicographic order, in which a proper prefix of a word is smaller than the word. A nonempty word w∈A∗w \in A^* is a Lyndon word if w<vw < v for every nonempty proper suffix vv of ww. Let ww be a Lyndon word of length at least 22. Let vv be the longest proper suffix of ww that is a Lyndon word. Write w=uvw = uv; this is the standard factorization of ww, and uu is also a Lyndon word.

Let kk be a field and let L(A)L(A) be the free Lie algebra over kk on AA. For each Lyndon word ww define Pw∈L(A)P_w \in L(A) by Pa=aP_a = a for a∈Aa \in A and Pw=[Pu,Pv]P_w = [P_u, P_v] when w=uvw = uv is the standard factorization. The Lyndon basis of L(A)L(A) is the family (Pw)(P_w), where ww runs over the Lyndon words. A standard theorem states that this family is a basis of L(A)L(A).

Remarks

Example: let A={a,b}A = \set{a, b} with a<ba < b. The Lyndon words of length at most 33 are aa, bb, abab, aabaab and abbabb. For aabaab, the proper suffixes abab and bb are both larger than aabaab, and the longest Lyndon suffix is abab, so Paab=[a,[a,b]]P_{aab} = [a, [a, b]]. For abbabb, the suffix bbbb is not a Lyndon word, so the standard factorization is ab⋅bab \cdot b and Pabb=[[a,b],b]P_{abb} = [[a, b], b].

Non-example: abababab is not a Lyndon word, since its suffix abab is a proper prefix and hence smaller than abababab.

If AA has qq elements, the number of Lyndon words of length nn is 1n∑d∣nμ(d) qn/d,\frac{1}{n} \sum_{d \mid n} \mu(d)\, q^{n/d}, where μ\mu is the Möbius function. By the basis theorem, this is also the dimension of the homogeneous component of degree nn of L(A)L(A), which is Witt's formula. An equivalent definition: a nonempty word is a Lyndon word if and only if it is strictly smaller than all its nontrivial cyclic rotations.
