Definition
Let be a field of characteristic not . A Malcev algebra over is a vector space over with a bilinear product such that:
- for all (the product is anticommutative);
- for all (Malcev identity).
Remarks
With the Jacobian , the Malcev identity is equivalent, for anticommutative products, to .
Example: every Lie algebra is a Malcev algebra, since makes both sides of vanish. If is an alternative algebra, then with the commutator is a Malcev algebra.
Non-example: let have basis with , , , , and all other products of basis vectors zero. This product is anticommutative, and . In the form , take , , . The left side is , since is alternating. The right side is . So the Malcev identity fails.
