Statement

Let a lossless medium have a second-order nonlinear susceptibility with full permutation symmetry. Let three collinear monochromatic plane waves of frequencies ω1,ω2\omega_1, \omega_2 and ω3=ω1+ω2\omega_3 = \omega_1 + \omega_2 interact in it. Let Ij(z)I_j(z) be the intensity of the wave of frequency ωj\omega_j at position zz along the direction of travel, in the slowly varying envelope approximation. Then 1ω1dI1dz=1ω2dI2dz=−1ω3dI3dz.\frac{1}{\omega_1} \frac{dI_1}{dz} = \frac{1}{\omega_2} \frac{dI_2}{dz} = -\frac{1}{\omega_3} \frac{dI_3}{dz}.

Remarks

The coupled amplitude equations of the three waves have coupling constants that, by permutation symmetry in a lossless medium, are all the same effective coefficient. Substituting them into dIj/dzdI_j/dz gives the same expression for I1′/ω1I_1'/\omega_1 and I2′/ω2I_2'/\omega_2 and its negative for I3′/ω3I_3'/\omega_3. The relations hold for any phase mismatch. Adding them gives conservation of total intensity, I1+I2+I3I_1 + I_2 + I_3 constant, since ω3=ω1+ω2\omega_3 = \omega_1 + \omega_2. In terms of photons, Ij/(ℏωj)I_j / (\hbar \omega_j) is a photon flux, so each photon at ω3\omega_3 that disappears produces one photon at ω1\omega_1 and one at ω2\omega_2. Manley and Rowe first derived such relations in 1956 for lossless nonlinear reactances in electrical circuits.

Going deeper

For a student

In an optical parametric amplifier, the relations show that the signal and the idler gain equal numbers of photons. In sum-frequency generation they give the maximum conversion efficiency from the lower frequencies to ω3\omega_3. For second-harmonic generation, with ω1=ω2\omega_1 = \omega_2, they reduce to conservation of energy between the fundamental and the harmonic. They are a first integral of the coupled amplitude equations and help to solve them in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions.
