statement theorem

Mantel's theorem

Statement

Let GG be a finite simple graph with nn vertices and no cycle of length 33. Then GG has at most ⌊n2/4⌋\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor edges.

Remarks

The bound is sharp: the complete bipartite graph K⌊n/2⌋,⌈n/2⌉K_{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor, \lceil n/2 \rceil} has no triangle and has ⌊n2/4⌋\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor edges. The theorem is the case r=2r = 2 of Turán's theorem.

History

Willem Mantel stated the theorem in 1907.

Explanations

L1 human

A graph on nn vertices without a triangle can have at most about a quarter of n2n^2 edges. Split the vertices into two equal halves and join each pair across: this graph reaches the bound.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
