Many-sorted algebra
Builds on SetFunctionCartesian product
Definition
Let be a set, whose elements are called sorts. An -sorted signature is a set of operation symbols, each with a type , where and . A many-sorted -algebra consists of:
- a set for each sort , the carrier of sort ;
- for each symbol of type , a function on the Cartesian product.
A homomorphism of -algebras is a family of maps with for every symbol of type and all .
Remarks
Example: let , with symbols , , and the field operations on the sort . A vector space over a field gives an algebra with and ; each operation sends arguments of the right sorts to the right sort.
Non-example: the same data with a map in place of scalar multiplication fails clause 2, since the value of must lie in the carrier of sort .
With one sort, a many-sorted algebra is an ordinary algebra. Birkhoff and Lipson called these structures heterogeneous algebras. Some authors require each carrier to be nonempty.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
