Probability theory and stochastic processes Theorem
Marchenko–Pastur law
Builds on EigenvalueIndependent and identically distributed random variablesConvergence in distribution
Statement
Let be independent and identically distributed real random variables with mean and variance . Let be positive integers with as . Let be the matrix , let , and let , where are the eigenvalues of . Let and . Then, almost surely, converges weakly to the Marchenko–Pastur distribution with ratio , the probability measure where .
Remarks
The proof can use the moment method or the Stieltjes transform. The Stieltjes transform of the limit solves the quadratic equation , and inverting it gives the density. When the matrix has rank at most , which explains the atom of mass at . The limit has mean and second moment . Example: for the support is and the density is .

For a student
It is the analogue of the Wigner semicircle law for sample covariance matrices. In high-dimensional statistics it shows that the sample covariance matrix is a poor estimate of the true covariance when is not small. Eigenvalues of data that fall outside are read as signals that are not pure noise.
