Marsden–Weinstein reduction
Definition
Let be a symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a Lie group and a moment map . Assume that acts freely and properly on the level set . Then is a submanifold of , the quotient is a smooth manifold, and the quotient map is smooth. Let be the inclusion. The Marsden–Weinstein reduction (or symplectic quotient) of by is the manifold with the unique -form such that
Remarks
The Marsden–Weinstein–Meyer theorem says that exists, is unique, and is symplectic, and that . Freeness of the action on implies that is a regular value of , which is why is a submanifold. Properness holds automatically when is compact. Reduction at another value uses divided by the stabilizer of under the coadjoint action.
Example: let act on by , with the standard symplectic form. A moment map is . Then is the unit sphere , the circle acts freely on it, and the reduction is with a multiple of the Fubini–Study form.
Non-example: take the same circle action on with . The level set is a fixed point, so the action on it is not free and the definition does not apply.
