Builds on Continuous-time Markov chainOrdinary differential equation
Definition
Let be a finite or countable set of states. For each pair in , let be a transition rate, and assume for every . The master equation with these rates is the system of ordinary differential equations for a family of probability distributions on .
Remarks
With the matrix for and , the equation reads , with as a row vector. This is the Kolmogorov forward equation of the continuous-time Markov chain with rate matrix , and is the probability that the chain is in state at time . For finite the solution is .
Example: for with and , where , the equation for is . Its solution is , which tends to .
Non-example: the system , without the loss term, is not a master equation; it does not conserve , so does not stay a probability distribution.
A distribution is stationary when the right side vanishes; it satisfies detailed balance when for all , which is a stronger condition.
