Definition

Let GG be a group and let π\pi be a representation of GG on a complex vector space VV. Let v∈Vv \in V, and let ℓ\ell be a linear functional on VV, taken continuous when VV is a topological vector space. The matrix coefficient of π\pi attached to vv and ℓ\ell is the function cv,ℓ ⁣:G→ℂc_{v, \ell} \colon G \to \C given by cv,ℓ(g)=ℓ(π(g)v).c_{v, \ell}(g) = \ell(\pi(g) v). When π\pi is a unitary representation on a Hilbert space ℋ\mathcal{H}, one usually takes ℓ=⟨⋅,w⟩\ell = \ip{\cdot}{w}, so that cv,w(g)=⟨π(g)v,w⟩c_{v, w}(g) = \ip{\pi(g) v}{w} for v,w∈ℋv, w \in \mathcal{H}.

Remarks

If dim⁡V=n\dim V = n and e1,…,ene_1, \dots, e_n is a basis with dual basis e1∗,…,en∗e_1^*, \dots, e_n^* in the dual space, then πij(g)=ei∗(π(g)ej)\pi_{ij}(g) = e_i^*(\pi(g) e_j) is the (i,j)(i, j) entry of the matrix of π(g)\pi(g). Every matrix coefficient of π\pi is a linear combination of the πij\pi_{ij}, because cv,ℓc_{v, \ell} is linear in vv and in ℓ\ell. The left and right translates of a matrix coefficient of π\pi are again matrix coefficients of π\pi: cv,ℓ(hg)=cπ(g)v,ℓ(h)c_{v, \ell}(h g) = c_{\pi(g) v, \ell}(h).

Example: let G=SO(2)G = \mathrm{SO}(2) act on ℝ2⊂ℂ2\R^2 \subset \C^2 by rotations rθ=(cos⁡θ−sin⁡θsin⁡θcos⁡θ)r_\theta = \begin{pmatrix} \cos \theta & -\sin \theta \\ \sin \theta & \cos \theta \end{pmatrix}. With v=e1v = e_1 and ℓ=e2∗\ell = e_2^*, the matrix coefficient is θ↦sin⁡θ\theta \mapsto \sin \theta.

Non-example: on the circle group ℝ/2πℤ\R / 2\pi\Z, the matrix coefficients of the finite-dimensional continuous representations are exactly the trigonometric polynomials. The function θ↦∣sin⁡θ∣\theta \mapsto \abs{\sin \theta} has infinitely many nonzero Fourier coefficients, so it is not a matrix coefficient of any finite-dimensional continuous representation.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
