Statement
Let be an matrix with columns . Let be a column vector with entries, and let be a column vector with entries.
Then the following three statements are equivalent.
- The vector satisfies the equation , using the matrix-vector product.
- The vector is the linear combination of the columns of , with the entries of as weights.
- The entries form a solution of the linear system whose augmented matrix is .
Remarks
The product is defined as the combination of the columns of weighted by the entries of . This gives the link between the first two statements. The third statement reads the same equation one row at a time.
