Matrix function
Builds on Power seriesSquare matrixSpectral radius
Definition
Let be a complex power series with radius of convergence , where is allowed. Let and let be an complex matrix whose spectral radius satisfies . Then the series converges, with , and its sum is the matrix .
Remarks
If with , then . The matrix is always a polynomial in , so it commutes with . Example: has , and has . Since , , and indeed . Non-example: for the same and , , and the series diverges. For holomorphic near the spectrum of , the Cauchy integral or the Jordan form gives a more general definition; see the holomorphic functional calculus.
