Problem
Fix a field . Consider the real numbers such that an algebraic algorithm multiplies two matrices over with operations in (see big O notation). The matrix multiplication exponent is the infimum of these . Determine the value of ; in particular, decide whether .
Remarks
The bound holds because the output has entries, and the schoolbook matrix multiplication gives . The Strassen algorithm gave in 1969. Coppersmith and Winograd obtained in 1990. Refinements of their method by several groups since 2010 have brought the upper bound below . The problem is open: no lower bound better than is known. Strassen showed that can be read off from the tensor rank of the matrix multiplication tensor . It is the infimum of the such that this rank is . Many other problems of linear algebra, such as inverting a matrix or computing a determinant, can be solved with operations for every .
