Matrix norm
Builds on NormMatrixMatrix multiplication
Definition
Let be or , let , and let be the vector space of matrices over . A matrix norm on is a map such that, for all and :
- , and only if .
- .
- .
A matrix norm on is submultiplicative if moreover for all .
Remarks
Clauses 1 to 3 say that is a norm on ; many authors include submultiplicativity in the word "matrix norm". Example: for a vector norm on , the operator norm is a submultiplicative matrix norm, since . Non-example: is a norm but not submultiplicative. For one has , so . All norms on are equivalent, because the space has finite dimension.
