Matrix pencil
Builds on MatrixFieldDeterminantEigenvalue
Definition
Let be a field, let , and let and be matrices over . The matrix pencil of and is the matrix with entries in the polynomial ring . When , the pencil is regular if the polynomial is not the zero polynomial, and singular otherwise. For a regular pencil, an eigenvalue is a root of , and an eigenvector for is a vector with .
Remarks
Some authors write or ; this changes only signs. When is singular, a regular pencil is often said to have an eigenvalue , since is singular at . Example: and give , so the pencil is regular with eigenvalues and . Non-example: give , so the pencil is singular. If is invertible, the eigenvalues of the pencil are the ordinary eigenvalues of .
