Matrix rings over simple rings are simple
Builds on Simple ringMatrix ringTwo-sided ideal
Statement
Let be a ring with and let be an integer. Every two-sided ideal of the matrix ring has the form for a unique two-sided ideal of . In particular, if is a simple ring, then is a simple ring.
Remarks
Let be a two-sided ideal of and let be the set of all entries of all matrices in . With the matrix units , one has , and multiplying by scalar matrices and matrix units moves an entry to any position. From this, is a two-sided ideal of and . For example, the ideals of are the sets for . If is simple, the only choices are and , so has only the ideals and .

For a student
The bijection between ideals is one instance of Morita equivalence: and have equivalent module categories and the same lattice of two-sided ideals. Combined with Wedderburn's theorem it shows that the simple Artinian rings are exactly the rings with a division ring. Note that has many one-sided ideals even when is a field, such as the matrices whose only nonzero column is the first one.
