Matroid rank
Builds on MatroidBasis of a matroid
Definition
Let be a matroid. The rank function of is the map given by The rank of is .
Remarks
The maximum exists because is independent. All maximal independent subsets of have elements, and is the size of every basis of . A set is independent if and only if .
The rank function satisfies, for all :
- .
- If , then .
- (submodularity).
Conversely, every function with these three properties is the rank function of exactly one matroid.
Example: for the matroid of the columns of a matrix, is the rank of the submatrix formed by the columns in . For the graphic matroid of a graph with vertex set , , where is the number of connected components of the graph .
Non-example: in the uniform matroid , whose independent sets are the subsets of with at most elements, the size function is not the rank function, because .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
