Maurer–Cartan form
Builds on Lie groupOne-formDifferential of a smooth mapZariski tangent spaceLeft-invariant vector field
Definition
Let be a Lie group with identity and Lie algebra , the tangent space at . For , let , , be left translation. The (left) Maurer–Cartan form is the -valued one-form on with for each , where is the differential of at .
Remarks
Example: for , left translation by is the linear map of . So , written . Then , which is the Maurer–Cartan equation for matrix groups.
Non-example: the form , with , also takes values in , but it is not the left Maurer–Cartan form. For it is , and at , one gets . It is the right Maurer–Cartan form.
The form is left-invariant: for all . For each left-invariant vector field , the function is constant, equal to . In general it satisfies .
