Definition
Let be a Noetherian integral domain with field of fractions , and let be a finite-dimensional algebra over . An -order in is maximal if there is no -order in with .
Remarks
Example: is a maximal -order in . Example: for an algebraic number field , the ring of integers is the unique maximal -order in . The reason is that every element of an order is integral over and so lies in . Non-example: is an order in , but it is strictly contained in the order with , so it is not maximal. Maximal orders need not be unique: with , the order is maximal in and contains the matrix , which is not in . If is a Dedekind domain and is a separable algebra over , every -order in is contained in a maximal -order.
