Maximal subfield

Summary

Let DD be a division ring that is finite-dimensional over its center, a field KK. A maximal subfield of DD is a subfield that contains KK and is not contained in a larger subfield. Its degree over KK always equals the degree of DD, and it splits DD. So the study of a division algebra reduces in part to the study of the fields it contains.
