Definition

Let KK be a field and let DD be a division ring that is a central simple algebra over KK. A subfield of DD is a subring LL of DD that is a field. A maximal subfield of DD is a subfield LL with K⊆LK \subseteq L that is not properly contained in any other subfield of DD.

Remarks

Every maximal subfield LL satisfies [L:K]=deg⁡D[L : K] = \deg D, the degree of DD, and LL splits DD. Indeed, maximality gives CD(L)=LC_D(L) = L, and the double centralizer theorem gives [L:K]2=dim⁡KD[L : K]^2 = \dim_K D. Conversely, a subfield L⊇KL \supseteq K with [L:K]=deg⁡D[L : K] = \deg D is maximal. For a central simple algebra AA that is not a division algebra, a subfield L⊇KL \supseteq K of AA with [L:K]=deg⁡A[L : K] = \deg A is also called a maximal subfield.

Example: in ℍ\mathbb{H} over ℝ\R, the subalgebra L=ℝ+ℝiL = \R + \R i is a field isomorphic to ℂ\C, and [L:ℝ]=2=deg⁡ℍ[L : \R] = 2 = \deg \mathbb{H}, so LL is a maximal subfield.

Non-example: the subfield ℝ\R of ℍ\mathbb{H} contains ℝ\R but is properly contained in ℝ+ℝi\R + \R i, so it is not maximal.
