Mayer f-function

Builds on Exponential function

Definition

Let φ ⁣:ℝd→ℝ∪{+∞}\varphi \colon \R^d \to \R \cup \set{+\infty} be an even pair potential, so that two particles at positions xx and yy interact with energy φ(x−y)\varphi(x - y). Let β>0\beta > 0 be the inverse temperature. The Mayer ff-function is f(x)=e−βφ(x)−1,x∈ℝd,f(x) = e^{-\beta \varphi(x)} - 1, \qquad x \in \R^d, with the exponential convention e−∞=0e^{-\infty} = 0. One writes fij=f(xi−xj)f_{ij} = f(x_i - x_j) for particles ii and jj.

Remarks

Always f≥−1f \ge -1, and f(x)→0f(x) \to 0 as ∣x∣→∞\abs{x} \to \infty when φ(x)→0\varphi(x) \to 0. Example: the hard-sphere potential in ℝ3\R^3, with φ(x)=+∞\varphi(x) = +\infty for ∣x∣<σ\abs{x} < \sigma and φ(x)=0\varphi(x) = 0 otherwise, gives f=−𝟏{∣x∣<σ}f = -\mathbf{1}_{\set{\abs{x} < \sigma}}. Its second virial coefficient is B2=−12∫ℝ3f(x) dx=2πσ33B_2 = -\frac{1}{2} \int_{\R^3} f(x) \, dx = \frac{2 \pi \sigma^3}{3}. Non-example: the Boltzmann factor e−βφe^{-\beta \varphi} itself is not the Mayer function; it tends to 11 rather than 00 at large distances. The identity ∏i<je−βφ(xi−xj)=∏i<j(1+fij)\prod_{i < j} e^{-\beta \varphi(x_i - x_j)} = \prod_{i < j} (1 + f_{ij}) expands into a sum over graphs on the particles.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
