Real functions Functions of several real variables Theorem
McShane–Whitney extension
Statement
Let be a metric space, let be nonempty, and let . Let satisfy for all . For set Then:
- and are real-valued, equal on , and satisfy the Lipschitz condition with constant on .
- Every function that equals on and is Lipschitz with constant satisfies on .
Remarks
Proof idea: fix ; for , , so the infimum is finite. For the same inequality with shows , and the choice gives . Each function is -Lipschitz, and an infimum of -Lipschitz functions that is finite is -Lipschitz. Example: on with , , and , both and equal on , while and for , and and for . For maps into with , the same constant needs the Kirszbraun theorem.
Going deeper
For a student
The result needs no structure on beyond the metric, unlike the vector-valued Kirszbraun theorem. It shows, for example, that every Lipschitz function on a closed set of extends to , which is useful before applying Rademacher's theorem.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
