Measure and integration Definition
Measurable function
Definition
Let and be measurable spaces. A function is measurable if for every . A function is measurable if it is measurable for the Borel sigma-algebra on .
Remarks
A function is measurable if and only if for every . It suffices to check preimages of a family that generates . Example: every continuous is Borel measurable, since preimages of open sets are open and the open sets generate the Borel sets. Example: the indicator function is measurable if and only if . Non-example: if is a non-measurable subset of , then is not Lebesgue measurable, because . For Lebesgue measure on , a measurable function usually means one with the Lebesgue measurable sets and the Borel sets. A composition of measurable functions is measurable.
