Definition

A measure space is a triple (X,Σ,μ)(X, \Sigma, \mu), where (X,Σ)(X, \Sigma) is a measurable space and μ\mu is a measure on (X,Σ)(X, \Sigma).

Remarks

Let X={1,…,6}X = \set{1, \ldots, 6}, let Σ\Sigma be the power set of XX, and let μ(A)=∣A∣/6\mu(A) = \abs{A} / 6. Then Σ\Sigma is a σ-algebra and μ\mu is a measure, since the number of elements is additive over disjoint sets, so (X,Σ,μ)(X, \Sigma, \mu) is a measure space. On ℕ\N, let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be the family of finite sets and of sets with finite complement, and let μ(A)=∣A∣\mu(A) = \abs{A} for finite AA and μ(A)=∞\mu(A) = \infty otherwise. Then (ℕ,𝒜,μ)(\N, \mathcal{A}, \mu) is not a measure space, since 𝒜\mathcal{A} is not a σ-algebra: it does not contain the set of even numbers. A measure space with μ(X)=1\mu(X) = 1 is a probability space.
