Example
Let . Divide each cube of side in into equal cubes of side . Remove the interiors of the central cube and of the cubes that share a face with it. The union of the other cubes is . The Menger sponge is .
The set is a continuum. Each is a finite union of closed cubes, so it is compact. It is connected: the kept cubes in each divided cube are the edge cubes and corner cubes, which form a connected frame. A decreasing intersection of nonempty compact connected sets is nonempty, compact and connected.
Remarks
The set has volume , so has volume . Its Hausdorff dimension is . Its Lebesgue covering dimension is , so topologically it is a curve. Each face of the cube meets in a Sierpiński carpet. Menger showed that every compact metric space of dimension at most embeds in , so is a universal curve.
