Definition

A Milnor square is a commutative square of rings with identity and ring homomorphisms R→ f1 R1f2↓↓g1R2→ g2 R′\begin{array}{ccc} R & \xrightarrow{\ f_1\ } & R_1 \\ {\scriptstyle f_2}\downarrow & & \downarrow{\scriptstyle g_1} \\ R_2 & \xrightarrow{\ g_2\ } & R' \end{array} such that:

  1. RR is the pullback R1×R′R2={(a,b)∈R1×R2:g1(a)=g2(b)}R_1 \times_{R'} R_2 = \set{(a, b) \in R_1 \times R_2 : g_1(a) = g_2(b)}, with f1f_1 and f2f_2 the two projections;
  2. at least one of g1g_1 and g2g_2 is surjective.

Remarks

Example: let R⊆SR \subseteq S be rings and let II be an ideal of SS contained in RR, hence also an ideal of RR. Then the square with R→SR \to S, R→R/IR \to R/I, S→S/IS \to S/I and R/I→S/IR/I \to S/I is a Milnor square: S→S/IS \to S/I is surjective, and (s,r+I)(s, r + I) with s+I=r+Is + I = r + I forces s∈Rs \in R, so R=S×S/IR/IR = S \times_{S/I} R/I. Example: for a field kk, the ring k[x,y]/(xy)k[x, y]/(xy) is the pullback of k[x]→k←k[y]k[x] \to k \leftarrow k[y], both maps sending the variable to 00. Non-example: the square with R=R1=R2=ℤR = R_1 = R_2 = \Z and R′=ℤ/2ℤR' = \Z/2\Z, all maps natural, is commutative with surjective gig_i, but it fails clause 1, since the pullback {(a,b)∈ℤ2:a≡b(mod2)}\set{(a, b) \in \Z^2 : a \equiv b \pmod 2} is not ℤ\Z.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
