Minimal surface
Builds on Regular surfaceMean curvature
Definition
Let be a regular surface with mean curvature . The surface is minimal if for every point .
Remarks
The catenoid is minimal. Its principal curvatures are , so . The sphere of radius is not minimal: both principal curvatures equal for the inward normal, so .
Equivalent forms:
- is minimal if and only if, for every compact region and every smooth normal variation of fixed on , the first variation of area is zero.
- If is a conformal parametrization of , then is minimal if and only if each coordinate function of is harmonic.
- The graph of a smooth function is minimal if and only if , the minimal surface equation.
A minimal surface need not minimize area among all surfaces with the same boundary; it is only a critical point.
