Minkowski functional
Builds on Absorbing setVector space
Definition
Let be or , let be a vector space over , and let be an absorbing set. The Minkowski functional (or gauge) of is the map given by
Remarks
Since is absorbing, the set is nonempty, so is a finite number. If is convex, then is sublinear: and for . If is convex and balanced, then is a seminorm. Example: let be a norm on and ; then if and only if , so . Non-example: in the segment is not absorbing, and for the set is empty, so no finite value is defined. Some authors allow any set and set when no exists. In a topological vector space, the Minkowski functional of a convex open neighbourhood of is continuous, and .
