Definition
Minkowski space is a pair where:
- is a real vector space of dimension ;
- is a symmetric bilinear form;
- is nondegenerate and has signature , that is, one negative and three positive directions.
The form is the Minkowski metric. Every such space has a basis with , where . In such a basis, for and ,
Remarks
Example: with is Minkowski space, written . Check: is symmetric and bilinear, its matrix is invertible, so is nondegenerate, and it has one negative and three positive eigenvalues. Non-example: with fails clause 3, since its signature is . Many physics texts use the opposite sign convention . Often Minkowski space means the affine space of events whose translation space is ; it is then a flat Lorentzian manifold. A vector is timelike if , null (or lightlike) if and , and spacelike if . In physics , where is time and is the speed of light.
