Definition
Let be a theory in a first-order signature . The theory is model complete if the following holds for all models and of . If is a substructure of , then is an elementary substructure of .
Remarks
Equivalently, every embedding between models of is elementary. By Robinson's test, is model complete if and only if every -formula is equivalent modulo to an existential formula with quantifier-free. A theory with quantifier elimination is model complete.
Example: the theory of dense linear orders without endpoints is model complete, since it has quantifier elimination. Let be two such orders and let be a tuple of . A formula is equivalent to a quantifier-free formula. That formula only compares elements of , so it has the same truth value in and in .
Non-example: the theory of dense linear orders with a least and a greatest element is not model complete. The orders and are models, and the first is a substructure of the second. The element satisfies in but not in .
The theory of real closed fields in the signature is model complete but does not have quantifier elimination.
