Definition

Let LL be a signature and let TT be an LL-theory. An LL-structure ℳ\mathcal{M} is a model of TT when ℳ⊨φ\mathcal{M} \models \varphi for every sentence φ\varphi in TT. Here ℳ⊨φ\mathcal{M} \models \varphi means that φ\varphi is true in ℳ\mathcal{M} under the usual inductive definition of truth. The notation is ℳ⊨T\mathcal{M} \models T.

Remarks

Example: let TT be the theory of groups in the signature {⋅,e,−1}\set{\cdot, e, {}^{-1}}. The structure (ℤ,+,0,−)(\Z, +, 0, -), with ⋅\cdot read as ++, ee as 00 and −1{}^{-1} as −-, is a model of TT. Indeed addition of integers is associative, 00 is neutral and −x-x is an inverse of xx.

Non-example: the structure (ℕ,+,0,id⁡)(\N, +, 0, \id), with −1{}^{-1} read as the identity map, is not a model of TT. The sentence ∀x (x⋅x−1=e)\forall x \, (x \cdot x^{-1} = e) fails at x=1x = 1, because 1+1≠01 + 1 \ne 0.

A theory is satisfiable when it has a model. The class of all models of TT is often written Mod(T)\mathrm{Mod}(T).

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
