Definition
Let be a locally compact group and let be a left Haar measure on . For , the measure on Borel sets is again a left Haar measure. By the uniqueness part of the existence and uniqueness of Haar measure, there is a unique real number such that The map is the modular function of .
Remarks
The number does not depend on the choice of , since any other left Haar measure is with . The map is a continuous homomorphism into the multiplicative group . In integral form, for compactly supported continuous .
Example: let be the group of pairs with and , with product , the group of maps . The measure is a left Haar measure. Right multiplication by sends to , a map with Jacobian determinant . So , and .
For this group the measure is a right Haar measure but not a left one, so the left and right Haar measures differ.
Some authors use the reciprocal convention, defining the modular function by or through right Haar measure, so formulas must be checked against the source.
