Definition

Let (M,ω)(M, \omega) be a symplectic manifold and let GG be a Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g} and dual space 𝔤∗\mathfrak{g}^*. Let GG act smoothly on MM by symplectomorphisms. For ξ∈𝔤\xi \in \mathfrak{g}, let ξM\xi_M be the vector field ξM(x)=ddt∣t=0exp⁡(tξ)⋅x\xi_M(x) = \frac{d}{dt}\big|_{t=0} \exp(t\xi) \cdot x. A moment map for the action is a smooth map μ ⁣:M→𝔤∗\mu \colon M \to \mathfrak{g}^* such that:

  1. For every ξ∈𝔤\xi \in \mathfrak{g}, the function μξ(x)=⟨μ(x),ξ⟩\mu^\xi(x) = \langle \mu(x), \xi \rangle satisfies ιξMω=dμξ\iota_{\xi_M} \omega = d\mu^\xi, so ξM\xi_M is the Hamiltonian vector field of μξ\mu^\xi.
  2. μ\mu is equivariant: μ(g⋅x)=Adg∗μ(x)\mu(g \cdot x) = \mathrm{Ad}^*_g \mu(x) for all g∈Gg \in G and x∈Mx \in M, where Ad∗\mathrm{Ad}^* is the coadjoint action.

An action with a moment map is called a Hamiltonian action.

Remarks

Example: let the circle S1=ℝ/2πℤS^1 = \R / 2\pi\Z act on ℝ2\R^2 by rotations, with ω=dx∧dy\omega = dx \wedge dy. Identify 𝔤\mathfrak{g} and 𝔤∗\mathfrak{g}^* with ℝ\R; the generator is ξM=−y ∂x+x ∂y\xi_M = -y\,\partial_x + x\,\partial_y. Let μ(x,y)=−12(x2+y2)\mu(x, y) = -\frac{1}{2}(x^2 + y^2). Then ιξMω=−y dy−x dx=dμ\iota_{\xi_M} \omega = -y\,dy - x\,dx = d\mu, and clause 2 holds because GG is abelian and μ\mu is rotation invariant.

Non-example: the translations of the torus T2=ℝ2/ℤ2T^2 = \R^2 / \Z^2 in the xx direction preserve ω=dx∧dy\omega = dx \wedge dy, but there is no moment map. Clause 1 would need ι∂xω=dy\iota_{\partial_x} \omega = dy to be the differential of a function on T2T^2, and dydy is closed but not exact there.

For a connected group, clause 2 can be replaced by an infinitesimal condition. It says that ξ↦μξ\xi \mapsto \mu^\xi is a Lie algebra homomorphism into functions with the Poisson bracket, up to the sign convention. When GG is abelian, a moment map can be changed by adding any constant in 𝔤∗\mathfrak{g}^*. Many authors use the opposite sign convention in clause 1.
