Monoid object
Builds on Monoidal categoryMonoid
Definition
Let be a monoidal category. A monoid object in is an object together with morphisms (multiplication) and (unit) such that:
- associativity: as morphisms ;
- left unit: as morphisms ;
- right unit: as morphisms .
A morphism of monoid objects is a morphism with and .
Remarks
Example: in , a monoid object is a set with and ; the three axioms say , and , so it is an ordinary monoid. Example: in , a monoid object is a ring, since a bilinear multiplication is a morphism . Non-example: in , the set with and fails associativity, because while . A monoid object in a symmetric monoidal category is commutative if , where is the symmetry.
