Description
The Monster group is the largest of the sporadic groups. It is a finite simple group of order which is , about .
Remarks
The smallest nontrivial irreducible representation of over has dimension . Robert Griess constructed as the automorphism group of a commutative non-associative algebra of dimension , the Griess algebra. Its existence had been predicted earlier by Bernd Fischer and by Griess. The -invariant has the expansion with , and . This coincidence led to the monstrous moonshine conjecture of Conway and Norton, proved by Richard Borcherds. Twenty of the sporadic groups are subquotients of , that is, quotients of subgroups of ; the other six are the pariah groups.
