Counterexample
Let be the closed upper half-plane. Give a point with the usual Euclidean open discs around it, of radius less than , as basic neighbourhoods. Give a point the basic neighbourhoods , where is an open disc of radius centred at . Such a disc is tangent to the -axis at . The space with this topology is the Moore plane, also called the Niemytzki plane. It is a Tychonoff space, hence Hausdorff and regular, but it is not normal.
Remarks
The -axis is closed, since every point with has a disc neighbourhood missing . The subspace is discrete, because a tangent disc neighbourhood of meets only in . So every subset of is closed in . The points with rational coordinates and form a countable dense set, so is separable. By Jones' lemma, a separable normal space has no closed discrete subset with . Here , so is not normal. For example, the points of with rational and the points of with irrational are disjoint closed sets that cannot be separated by disjoint open sets. Since is Tychonoff, it is a subspace of a compact Hausdorff space, which is normal; so a subspace of a normal space need not be normal.
