Mori–Zwanzig formalism

Builds on ProjectionMatrix exponential

Definition

Let VV be a finite-dimensional real or complex vector space of observables. Let L ⁣:V→VL \colon V \to V be a linear map, the Liouville operator. An observable A∈VA \in V evolves as A(t)=etLAA(t) = e^{tL} A, by the matrix exponential. Let P ⁣:V→VP \colon V \to V be a projection onto a subspace of relevant observables, and let Q=I−PQ = I - P. The Mori–Zwanzig formalism is the decomposition, valid for every A∈VA \in V and t≥0t \ge 0, ddtA(t)=etLPLA+∫0te(t−s)LPLF(s) ds+F(t),\frac{d}{dt} A(t) = e^{tL} P L A + \int_0^t e^{(t - s)L} P L F(s)\, ds + F(t), where F(t)=etQLQLAF(t) = e^{tQL} Q L A. The three terms are called:

  1. etLPLAe^{tL} P L A, the Markovian (streaming) term;
  2. ∫0te(t−s)LPLF(s) ds\int_0^t e^{(t - s)L} P L F(s)\, ds, the memory term;
  3. F(t)F(t), the fluctuating force (noise term).

Remarks

The decomposition follows from the Dyson identity etL=etQL+∫0te(t−s)LPLesQL dse^{tL} = e^{tQL} + \int_0^t e^{(t - s)L} P L e^{sQL}\, ds applied to QLAQLA, after splitting ddtA(t)=etLPLA+etLQLA\tfrac{d}{dt}A(t) = e^{tL}PLA + e^{tL}QLA. The noise satisfies PF(t)=0P F(t) = 0 for all tt: QLAQLA lies in the range of QQ, and QLQL maps VV into that range, so etQLe^{tQL} preserves it. Example: let V=ℝ2V = \R^2 with basis e1,e2e_1, e_2, let L=(01−10)L = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, let PP be the projection onto ℝe1\R e_1 along e2e_2, and let A=e1A = e_1. Then LA=−e2LA = -e_2, so PLA=0PLA = 0 and the Markovian term vanishes. Next QLe2=0QLe_2 = 0, so F(t)=−e2F(t) = -e_2 for all tt, and PLF(s)=−e1PLF(s) = -e_1, so the memory term is −∫0tA(u) du-\int_0^t A(u)\, du. The formalism gives ddtA(t)=−∫0tA(u) du−e2\tfrac{d}{dt}A(t) = -\int_0^t A(u)\, du - e_2, and indeed A(t)=(cos⁡t,−sin⁡t)A(t) = (\cos t, -\sin t) satisfies it. Non-example: take the non-idempotent map P=(2000)P = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} in the same example. The same formula can be written, but Q=I−PQ = I - P is not a projection. Here PF(t)=2te1+O(t2)≠0PF(t) = 2t e_1 + O(t^2) \ne 0 for small t>0t > 0, so the noise is no longer orthogonal to the relevant variables. In the usual applications VV is a Hilbert space of phase-space functions and LL is the Liouville operator of a Hamiltonian system. Then PP is the orthogonal projection onto the chosen variables in the equilibrium inner product (Mori), or a conditional expectation (Zwanzig).
