Morita equivalence of a ring with its matrix rings

Builds on Morita equivalenceMatrix ringRingModule over a ringProgenerator

Statement

Let RR be a ring with identity, let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer, and let Mn(R)M_n(R) be the ring of n×nn \times n matrices over RR. Then RR and Mn(R)M_n(R) are Morita equivalent. An equivalence from left RR-modules to left Mn(R)M_n(R)-modules sends NN to the module NnN^n of columns of length nn over NN. On NnN^n matrices act by matrix multiplication.

Remarks

A quasi-inverse functor sends a left Mn(R)M_n(R)-module LL to e11Le_{11} L, where e11e_{11} is the matrix with 11 in position (1,1)(1, 1) and 00 elsewhere. It is a left RR-module through the scalar matrices. The matrix units eije_{ij} give mutually inverse isomorphisms between e11Le_{11} L and ejjLe_{jj} L, and L=e11L⊕⋯⊕ennLL = e_{11} L \oplus \cdots \oplus e_{nn} L, which shows that the two functors are inverse up to natural isomorphism. In the language of progenerators, P=RnP = R^n is a progenerator of right RR-modules and its endomorphism ring is Mn(R)M_n(R). Example: a module over M2(ℤ)M_2(\Z) is the same as a pair of copies of one abelian group NN, glued by the matrix units, and the module is N2N^2. So the ideal theory, the Artinian and Noetherian conditions and the homological dimensions of Mn(R)M_n(R) match those of RR. Being commutative is not shared: M2(R)M_2(R) is not commutative for R≠0R \ne 0.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the first example of Morita equivalence and the model for the general theory. For a division ring DD, it shows that Mn(D)M_n(D), like DD, has exactly one simple module up to isomorphism, namely DnD^n. Morita's theorem says that every ring Morita equivalent to RR is of the form eMn(R)ee M_n(R) e for some nn and some idempotent ee with Mn(R)eMn(R)=Mn(R)M_n(R) e M_n(R) = M_n(R). So matrix rings and full corners of them give all rings with the same module category as RR.
