Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field and let and be algebraic varieties over . A morphism is a continuous map for the Zariski topologies with the following property. For every open set and every regular function , the function is regular. An isomorphism is a morphism that has an inverse morphism.
Remarks
If and are affine varieties, a map is a morphism if and only if with each a polynomial function on . A morphism gives the ring homomorphism , , on coordinate rings. This gives a bijection between morphisms and -algebra homomorphisms .
Example: , , is an isomorphism with inverse .
Non-example: , , is a bijective morphism but not an isomorphism. Its comorphism has image , which does not contain , so is not surjective and has no inverse morphism.
