Definition

Let SS be a Noetherian scheme of finite Krull dimension, and let SmS\mathrm{Sm}_S be the category of smooth schemes of finite type over SS. A family of étale morphisms {Ui→X}\{U_i \to X\} in SmS\mathrm{Sm}_S is a Nisnevich covering if the following holds. For every point x∈Xx \in X there are an index ii and a point u∈Uiu \in U_i over xx with the same residue field as xx. Consider the category of presheaves of simplicial sets on SmS\mathrm{Sm}_S with the Nisnevich-local model structure. Its weak equivalences are the maps that induce isomorphisms on all Nisnevich sheaves of homotopy groups. The motivic, or 𝔸1\mathbb{A}^1-, model structure is its left Bousfield localization at the projections X×S𝔸S1→XX \times_S \mathbb{A}^1_S \to X for all XX in SmS\mathrm{Sm}_S. Its homotopy category ℋ(S)\mathcal{H}(S) is the unstable motivic homotopy category of SS. Motivic homotopy theory over SS is the study of this model category and of its stabilisation with respect to ℙ1\mathbb{P}^1.

Remarks

By construction the projection 𝔸S1→S\mathbb{A}^1_S \to S becomes an isomorphism in ℋ(S)\mathcal{H}(S), so the affine line is contractible.

There are two basic spheres: the simplicial circle S1S^1 and the punctured line 𝔾m=𝔸1∖{0}\mathbb{G}_m = \mathbb{A}^1 \setminus \{0\}. The projective line ℙS1\mathbb{P}^1_S is isomorphic in ℋ(S)\mathcal{H}(S) to the smash product S1∧𝔾mS^1 \wedge \mathbb{G}_m (with suitable base points).

Non-example: over a field kk with more than two elements, 𝔾m\mathbb{G}_m is not contractible. The sheaf of units is a Nisnevich sheaf with 𝒪(X×𝔸1)×=𝒪(X)×\mathcal{O}(X \times \mathbb{A}^1)^\times = \mathcal{O}(X)^\times for reduced XX, so it is 𝔸1\mathbb{A}^1-local. Hence the morphisms Spec⁡k→𝔾m\operatorname{Spec} k \to \mathbb{G}_m in ℋ(k)\mathcal{H}(k) are the elements of k×k^\times, which is not a single point.

For a regular base SS, algebraic K-theory of smooth SS-schemes is representable in ℋ(S)\mathcal{H}(S) by ℤ×BGL∞\Z \times \mathrm{BGL}_\infty.
