Motzkin number
Builds on Lattice path
Definition
Let be an integer. A Motzkin path of length is a lattice path in with these properties:
- and ;
- each step is one of , and ;
- each point has second coordinate at least .
The Motzkin number is the number of Motzkin paths of length .
Remarks
Example: the Motzkin paths of length are , , and , so . Non-example: the path ends at but fails clause 3, because after two steps it is at height .
The first values are . Splitting a path at its first step gives the recurrence The generating function satisfies , hence Choosing the positions of the steps gives , where is the Catalan number. The Motzkin paths without steps are the Dyck words.
