Moufang loop

Builds on Quasigroup

Definition

A loop is a quasigroup LL with an element ee such that ea=ae=aea = ae = a for all a∈La \in L. A Moufang loop is a loop LL such that z(x(zy))=((zx)z)yfor all x,y,z∈L.z(x(zy)) = ((zx)z)y \quad \text{for all } x, y, z \in L.

Remarks

In a loop, this identity is equivalent to each of x(z(yz))=((xz)y)zx(z(yz)) = ((xz)y)z, (zx)(yz)=(z(xy))z(zx)(yz) = (z(xy))z and (zx)(yz)=z((xy)z)(zx)(yz) = z((xy)z). A loop is Moufang exactly when it is both a left and a right Bol loop.

Example: the nonzero octonions 𝕆∖{0}\mathbb{O} \setminus \set{0} under multiplication. They form a loop with identity 11, since 𝕆\mathbb{O} is a division algebra. The identity holds because the octonions satisfy the Moufang identities as an alternative algebra. It is not a group, because octonion multiplication is not associative.

Non-example: the loop L={e,a,b,c,d}L = \set{e, a, b, c, d} with the multiplication table below, where the row gives the left factor.

⋅\cdot ee aa bb cc dd
ee ee aa bb cc dd
aa aa ee cc dd bb
bb bb cc dd ee aa
cc cc dd aa bb ee
dd dd bb ee aa cc

Each element occurs once in each row and column, so LL is a loop with identity ee. Take z=az = a, x=ex = e, y=by = b: then z(x(zy))=a(ab)=ac=dz(x(zy)) = a(ab) = ac = d, while ((zx)z)y=(aa)b=eb=b((zx)z)y = (aa)b = eb = b.
