Moving frame
Definition
Let be a smooth manifold of dimension , and let be open. A moving frame, or local frame, on is an ordered -tuple of smooth vector fields on . The condition is that is a basis of for every . The dual coframe is the -tuple of -forms on with .
Remarks
A moving frame on is the same as a smooth section over of the frame bundle of . Example: on with polar coordinates, and form a moving frame; at each point they are orthonormal for the Euclidean metric, so they form a basis. Non-example: on , the pair is not a moving frame, because at the points with the second field vanishes. Given an affine connection , the connection forms of the frame are defined by , and Cartan's structure equations express torsion and curvature through and . A moving frame on all of exists only when the tangent bundle is trivial; for example has none.
