Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let B=[a1,b1]×⋯×[an,bn]B = [a_1, b_1] \times \cdots \times [a_n, b_n] be a closed box in ℝn\R^n with ai<bia_i < b_i. Its volume is ∣B∣=(b1−a1)⋯(bn−an)\abs{B} = (b_1 - a_1) \cdots (b_n - a_n). A partition PP of BB is given by a partition of each interval [ai,bi][a_i, b_i]; it cuts BB into finitely many subboxes B1,…,BNB_1, \dots, B_N. The mesh of PP is the largest diameter of the BjB_j. A tagged partition also chooses a point ξj∈Bj\xi_j \in B_j for each jj. For a function f ⁣:B→ℝf \colon B \to \R, the Riemann sum of a tagged partition is ∑j=1Nf(ξj)∣Bj∣\sum_{j=1}^N f(\xi_j) \abs{B_j}.

The function ff is Riemann integrable on BB if there is a real number II with the following property. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 such that every tagged partition of mesh less than δ\delta has a Riemann sum within ε\varepsilon of II. Then II is the multiple integral of ff over BB, written ∫Bf dV=∫⋯∫Bf(x1,…,xn) dx1⋯dxn.\int_B f \, dV = \int \cdots \int_B f(x_1, \dots, x_n) \, dx_1 \cdots dx_n.

Let A⊆ℝnA \subseteq \R^n be bounded and let f ⁣:A→ℝf \colon A \to \R. Let fAf_A be the function on a closed box B⊇AB \supseteq A that equals ff on AA and 00 on B∖AB \setminus A. Then ff is integrable on AA if fAf_A is integrable on BB, and ∫Af dV=∫BfA dV\int_A f \, dV = \int_B f_A \, dV. This does not depend on the choice of BB.

Remarks

For n=1n = 1 this is the Riemann integral; for n=2n = 2 and n=3n = 3 it is the double integral and the triple integral. A bounded set AA is Jordan measurable exactly when the constant 11 is integrable on AA, and then ∫A1 dV\int_A 1 \, dV is the Jordan measure of AA.

Example: f(x,y)=xyf(x, y) = xy on B=[0,1]2B = [0, 1]^2. The function is continuous, so it is integrable, and computing it as an iterated integral gives ∫01∫01xy dx dy=12⋅12=14\int_0^1 \int_0^1 xy \, dx \, dy = \frac{1}{2} \cdot \frac{1}{2} = \frac{1}{4}.

Non-example: let ff on [0,1]2[0, 1]^2 be 11 at points with both coordinates rational and 00 elsewhere. Every subbox contains points of both kinds, so some tagged partitions of any mesh have Riemann sum 11 and others have Riemann sum 00. No number II satisfies the condition, so ff is not Riemann integrable.
