statement proposition

Multiplicativity of the Möbius function

Statement

The Möbius function μ\mu is a multiplicative function. That is, μ(1)=1\mu(1) = 1 and μ(mn)=μ(m)μ(n)\mu(mn) = \mu(m) \mu(n) for all coprime positive integers mm and nn.

Remarks

The function μ\mu is not completely multiplicative: μ(4)=0\mu(4) = 0, but μ(2)2=1\mu(2)^2 = 1. The proof: for coprime mm and nn, the product mnmn is squarefree exactly when mm and nn are both squarefree. Then ω(mn)=ω(m)+ω(n)\omega(mn) = \omega(m) + \omega(n).

Explanations

L1 human

For example, μ(5)=−1\mu(5) = -1 and μ(6)=1\mu(6) = 1, and μ(30)=−1=μ(5)μ(6)\mu(30) = -1 = \mu(5) \mu(6). When mm and nn have no common prime, their prime factors just combine, so the signs multiply.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
