Multiplicity of a local ring
Builds on Local ringHilbert–Samuel functionKrull dimensionPrimary idealNoetherian ring
Definition
Let be a Noetherian local ring of Krull dimension , and let be an -primary ideal. Let be the polynomial that agrees with the Hilbert–Samuel function for all large . It has degree , and its leading coefficient has the form for a positive integer . The integer is the multiplicity of . The multiplicity of is .
Remarks
Example: let , with a field. For , , since the monomials of degree in number and those divisible by number . So , the leading coefficient is , and . Non-example: the function for an ideal that is not -primary, such as in , takes infinite values, so it has no multiplicity in this sense. A regular local ring has multiplicity , and an Artinian local ring has .
