Multitape Turing machine
Builds on Turing machine
Definition
Let be an integer. A -tape Turing machine is a tuple with the following parts.
- is a finite nonempty set of states, is the initial state, and is the set of halting states.
- is a finite set of tape symbols, is the blank, and is the input alphabet.
- is a partial function from to .
A configuration consists of a state and, for each tape , a tape content and a head position . Each has only finitely many non-blank cells. Suppose . Then the next configuration has state . On each tape it has written at cell , and head position , or when is , or . On input , the run starts in state with all heads at cell . Tape holds from cell onward, and all other cells are blank.
Remarks
For this is a Turing machine whose head may also stay in place. Example: a -tape machine decides whether is a palindrome. It copies to tape , moves head back to the start, and then compares tape read forward with tape read backward. Each phase takes steps, so the running time is linear. Non-example: a machine whose number of tapes grows with the input is not a -tape machine, because is fixed in advance. A one-tape machine can simulate a -tape machine that runs in time within steps, by storing the tapes on tracks of one tape. For palindromes this quadratic bound cannot be improved on one tape.
