Murray–von Neumann equivalence
Builds on C*-algebraPartial isometry
Definition
Let be a C*-algebra. A projection in is an element with . Two projections are Murray–von Neumann equivalent, written , if there is with
Remarks
Such a is a partial isometry with initial projection and final projection . The relation is reflexive (), symmetric ( in place of ), and transitive (if , , , , then works for and ). Example: in let ; then and is the projection onto the span of the , so this projection is equivalent to . Non-example: in , the projections and are not equivalent, since and always have the same rank. For K-theory one uses the same relation for projections in matrix algebras of different sizes, with a rectangular matrix over . Unitarily equivalent projections are Murray–von Neumann equivalent, but the converse fails in general, as the example above shows.
